In Alfian Sa'at's hands, these sketches are reimagined as flash fictions that record the lives of members of the Malay community in Singapore. I am an ethnically mixed (Chinese-Indian), English-educated professional with a middle-class background. Malay Sketches is a collection of stories that borrows its name from a book of anecdotes by colonial governor Frank Swettenham, describing Malay life on the Peninsula. The start of 2023 has been dominated by discussions about The Last of Us, a perfectly good series including one stunning episode. At its most potent, a perfect episode is like mainlining all the myriad ingredients of prestige television in a single sitting.īut great TV shows do not necessarily beget great episodes and, conversely, great episodes are not always the sign of a great show. It can refine the essence of the best shows into a single, self-contained moment. A truly brilliant episode can bridge the gap between cinema and TV. The main thing I didn't enjoy about this book was that on page 230 I knew what the twist was going to be and the reasoning behind it, and then had to wait 50 pages for the main character to catch up. There is something so satisfying and genuinely fun to have been able to read someone's body of work and see the connecting threads throughout.īut to this book in specific. It is my absolute favorite thing about reading an author with a backlog, especially one I just like so much. It was a really interesting experience reading this book and seeing threads of what was to come in future books. Once she gets to the house they are staying in, things slowly start to ramp up from uncomfortable to creepy and then to horror. The book opens with Nora running terrified through the woods then jumps to Nora in the hospital then to Nora at her house deciding if she should go on this weekend trip or not. It certainly affected me more than any other. Some are good, some are downright bad, but for me A Harlot High and Low was about the best. That is really saying something, considering he finished 91 books and left 46 more unfinished. For me, this is the pinnacle of Balzac’s work. I found A Harlot High and Low by Honoré de Balzac (also translated as The Splendors and Miseries of Courtesans) to be a complex and rich story, both a love tragedy as well as a complex society thriller. ![]() |
